Artist research - Arthur Rackham

I want to look at an artist who has provided me with a good amount of inspiration for a long time now, and that artist is Arthur Rackham, an Victorian illustrator who was known for producing the detailed images for Lewis Carroll's first edition of Alice in Wonderland.

Arthur Rackham was born in 1867, and he studied at the 'City of London School', and the Lambeth School of Art.
He made occasional sales to several illustrated magazines, such as 'Scraps' and 'Chums'.

I love Rackham's very rough, and detailed visual style, and I have looked at his work before on a few of my modules.
I feel as if my own work is heavily influenced by his pieces, and I will now show some similarities to my work.

Like Rackham, I also use bold linework as a part of my illustrations, and I occasionally work with colour, just like Rackham.
I also incorporate a very rough visual theme in my work, which is a style that I have been inspired with by Rackham.

Rackham had a very long, and successful career as one of the first established illustrators in the market, and his last published work was featured in the 1940 book, 'The Wind in the Willows'.
The book containing his illustrations was published posthumously.

Today, Rackham inspires many artists and illustrators, such as Caitlin Hackett, an artist that I have previously looked at in my research for this module, and one who also inspires me.

The below image is an excerpt from Hackett's website, stating that Arthur Rackham is one of her artistic influences.
